 ATOL Holiday Protection

During economical down turn many travel companies (including some major ones) having ceased operations resulting many holiday makers out of pocket. When you book with which is part of Elegant Travels, you can be completely rest assured in the knowledge that your holiday is fully protected and in safe hands. This is because we are governed by CAA. CAA is a government body who runs the ATOL Scheme. We have given CAA a large sum of money to be a part of the ATOL Scheme to protect our customers. ATOL protects you from losing money or being stranded abroad if the tour operator goes out of business. If a company with an ATOL goes out of business, the CAA will refund the people who have not travelled and arrange for people on holiday to fly home.

Below we have created this factsheet to help you get a better understanding of ATOL protection together with the benefits of booking with a ATOL holding travel company such as Elegant Travels.

With the you can lay your apprehensions to rest and here’s why:

1. We are ATOL Protected
2. Use scheduled Airline instead of charters

What is ATOL and what does ATOL stand for?

ATOL is a protection scheme for flights and air holidays, managed by the Civil Aviation Authority (“CAA”). Most companies who sell air travel in the UK are required by law to hold a licence called an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (“ATOL ”). When you book a complete air holiday package or just a flight, ATOL protects you from losing money or being stranded abroad if the tour operator goes out of business. All licensed firms, as with ourselves have to lodge bonds with the CAA so that if we were to go out of business, the CAA can give refunds to people who cannot travel and arrange for people abroad to finish their holidays and fly home. There is also a Government-backed fund called the Air Travel Trust that steps in if any ATOL bond is not enough to look after everyone affected by the failure. An ATOL offers protection to those people who book a holiday which includes air travel and accommodation.

Are ATOL holders?

We are ATOL holders., a trading name of Elegant Travel holds such a licence and our licence number is 9438. The air holiday packages shown on the website are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority.

What are the benefits of booking with a ATOL protected travel company?

1. Under the Package Travel Regulations, package holiday providers are responsible for all services and facilities offered as part of the package holiday. If there is a problem with any of the suppliers involved in the package holiday the provider is responsible for resolving the issue.

2. If the package holiday provider goes out of business before you have travelled the CAA will give you a full refund of all money you have paid.

3. If the package holiday provider goes out of business whilst you are holiday the CAA will arrange for you to complete your holiday and organise your flight home.

What does ABTA stand for?

Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA)

Does ABTA offer the same protection as ATOL?

No they don't, ATOL is a legal requirement that companies like tour operators must comply with to sell package holidays where a flight is part of the package. ABTA is travel trade association that requires members to hold an ATOL if a flight is part of the package holiday and takes other steps to ensure that your money is safe if booking through a member of ABTA.

Can I check if a travel company has ATOL protection?

Yes, you can check if the company holds an ATOL licence by visiting the CAA website or calling CAA. CAA telephone numbers and given in CAA website.

You will find that the more recent closure of XL holidays and other travel companies have been majorly due to two factors; 1.The economic meltdown owing to which lesser people chose to travel 2. Rise in fuel prices. With fuel prices skyrocketing and lesser number of people travelling, even XL who was the UK’s third largest tour operator could not sustain the financial pressure, since they operate their own charter aircrafts. Similarly First Choice cancelled all its chartered holidays to Sri Lanka for the coming year for exactly the same reason as above (despite the ever growing popularity of Sri Lanka).

At, we only use scheduled airline carriers for your holiday and do not rely on our own or other charter aircraft carriers. This means that we are under no financial pressure as far as your flights are concerned. The airlines we use include major carriers such as Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airway, Srilankan Airlines, Kuwait Airways and Oman Airways who are financially sound companies and who apart from being financially sound do not have to rely on holiday makers to fill seats.
